Mera Man Lochai

From the depths of my heart, I yearn for the Guru.
Like a betrothed bride who counts the days,
And every moment without Him feels like long, painful lifetimes.
Grant me, O Lord, the vision of Your Face—
Only Your presence can quench my thirst.
– Written by Guru Arjan in the composition Mera Man Lochai.

This longing is not mere nostalgia, but the soul’s deep yearning for Unity.
The image of the bride conveys: the Soul remembers where it belongs—to the Source.

The story

This shabad was inspired by Guru Arjan’s longing for his father, Guru Ram Das Ji, during a time when they were living apart. Three of his letters were prevented from reaching Guru Ram Das by a jealous brother, and finally, the fourth letter was born.

This is a shabad that practitioners on the spiritual path eventually chant for 40 days—for authentic relationships... For the healing of heart wounds in relationships—for all relationships.
